Scarred but not broken, Mars has twelve known calves and is an active grandmother, often seen breaching and socializing. When you adopt a whale, you will receive a personalized certificate of adoption, your whale’s photograph, biography and family tree, fascinating facts and figures about humpback whales, a map of their migratory path, and a humpback sticker to show your support. You’ll also receive monthly updates and a WDC’s newsletter with information on how your adoption is helping to save whales and dolphins worldwide.

Humpback whale Mars is a strong female aptly named after the Roman god of war. Scarred, yet not broken, Mars has eleven known calves and is a grandmother to even more. She can often be seen breaching and socializing with other humpbacks.

Your donation goes directly to funding our work to protect humpbacks and all whales.

Adoption Project

WDC’s Whale Adoption Project first began in the early 1980s. As the first humpback whale adoption program in the world, we have remained the best, as demonstrated by the number of whales who have been sponsored by their original adopters for almost 30 years. In 2014, WDC added two orcas to our adoptable whale family. Often called killer whales for their ability to take town sea lions and other large prey in the wild for food, Fife and Holly are welcome additions to our whale pod. All orca and humpback whale adopters will also receive monthly updates featuring seasonal sightings and personality profiles of the individual whales you adopt. There is an adoption package for everyone and each adoption helps fund our work to free cetaceans in captivity and protect adoptable whales, orcas, and dolphins, as well as the ocean habitats on which we all depend. Education Membership

Are you a teacher looking to bring the ocean to your landlocked classroom? A parent with a young animal lover? Add an education membership to your adoption and gain access to dozens of fun, NGSS-aligned digital materials to support your students’ or child’s love for the natural world and wildlife. For the orca-obsessed to the seal-savvy, your membership comes with readings, quizzes, and games optimized for ages 7-11.

At the standard tier, ($50 adoption fee + $25 education sign-on fee), you’ll receive access to 12 exclusive chapters, each containing download links to a reading, a quiz sheet, a word puzzle, a Booklet game, and an answer key. Each chapter focuses on a different marine mammal, including Sea Otters, Polar Bears, North Atlantic Right Whales and more! Take the pressure off lesson planning or making the most of a rainy afternoon with plenty of options to entertain and educate the young scientists in your life.

At the plus tier ($50 adoption fee + $110 sign-on fee), you’ll receive access to all the standard tier content as well as a personalized 1-hour virtual class with a member of WDC’s education team! Let us know what marine biology topic you’d like to dive further into with an expert (or leave it up to us), and we’ll curate a presentation and Q&A session just for you.
